Biography
Sharon Runner was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the Antelope Valley, a place she continues to call home and a region in which she has dedicated both her life and career.
In 1977, Sharon helped found Desert Christian Schools and using her leadership as well as desire to provide a unique learning environment, she laid the groundwork for what is now the largest Christian School in the Antelope Valley and one of the most successful in the nation. She continues to serve on their Board of Directors serving over 1500 students and their families.
runner-about2Sharon is the owner and founder of The Runner Group, a small business located in the high desert. As a small businesswoman, Sharon has used her work ethic and knowledge of local policies to help fellow small business owners as well as major employers for the region.
In 2002, Sharon Runner was elected to the California State Assembly where she served as a proud and effective advocate for her constituents. After serving three terms as an Assemblywoman, Sharon ran and was elected to the State Senate in 2011.
Following a double lung transplant in 2012, Sharon returned to work in the Senate but opted not to run for re-election.
Described as a “walking miracle,” Sharon recovered fully to regain her active lifestyle to work with charter schools developing programs to help at-risk students achieve academic success. In addition, she has volunteered with Donate Life CA, on the Sierra Donor Services Advisory Board and the National Scleroderma Foundation Legislative Committee. In 2014, Sharon was recognized with the “Spirit of Leadership” from the National Scleroderma Foundation for her contributions.
Throughout her career as a representative for the residents of the Antelope, Santa Clarita and Victor Valleys, Sharon managed to author and pass legislation that enhanced public safety, incentivized local job creation, and reformed redundant policies that wasted taxpayer dollars.
Sharon was the co-author of Prop 83, California’s Jessica’s Law, along with her husband, then Senator George Runner. Jessica’s Law was a statewide measure establishing some of the nation’s toughest laws against sexual predators. It was approved by 70% of California voters.
During her term in the Legislature, she was part of California Women Lead, serving on the State Board and as President. This bipartisan group is the largest organization in the state of elected women officials helping women to Engage, Empower and Elect more women to public office in California.
Sharon and George, have two children and four grandchildren.
