Ed Chau Biography
Assemblymember Ed Chau was elected in November 2012 to represent the 49th Assembly District, comprised of the communities of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City and portions of Montebello, and South El Monte.
Assemblymember Chau currently serves as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Housing and Community Development which oversees issues pertaining, to building standards, homeless programs, housing finance, land use planning, and redevelopment, among others.
In addition, he is a member of the Assembly Committees on Banking and Finance; Judiciary; and Labor and Employment. He is also Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Privacy, which examines a number of privacy related issues, such as mobile app privacy, internet privacy, data collection and surveillance privacy.
As a freshman Assemblymember, Mr. Chau has been a champion for consumers, passing legislation signed by the Governor to more effectively punish those who commit elder abuse; to protect the privacy of those seeking legal counsel; and to ensure better access to emergency housing assistance.
Growing up in a working class family, Assemblymember Chau learned the value of hard work and a good education early on. He attended local public schools and worked his way through college, and holds bachelor degrees in Computer Science and Sociology, both from the University of Southern California, and a Juris Doctorate degree from Southwestern Law School. He has worked as a computer engineer for IBM and a programmer for Unisys Corporation, where he helped create cutting-edge technology and focused on finding solutions to tomorrow’s problems. Assemblymember Chau, a principal in a law firm, has owned his own business for nearly 20 years. Additionally, he served as a Judge Pro Tem for the Los Angeles Superior Court for a decade.
Prior to being elected to the Assembly, he served as a Board Member on the Montebello Unified School District. Assemblymember Chau understands that good schools lead to good jobs. On the Montebello School Board, he helped spearhead initiatives to dramatically improve academic standards. Under his tenure, he helped balance the school district’s $200 million annual budget for 12 years in a row without any teacher layoffs, and while making new investments to improve classrooms and build new schools.
